Henderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 44,829. Its county seat is Henderson. The county is named for Colonel Richard Henderson, founder of the Transylvania Company.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,210 km² (467 mi²). 1,140 km² (440 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.80% water.

Demographics[]

As of the census of 2000, there were 44,829 people, 18,095 households, and 12,576 families residing in the county. The population density was 39/km² (102/mi²). There were 19,466 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.16% White, 7.10% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 18,095 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% were married couples living together, 11.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% were non-families. 26.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,892, and the median income for a family was $44,703. Males had a median income of $33,838 versus $22,572 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,470. 12.30% of the population and 9.70% of families were below the poverty line. 17.20% of those under the age of 18 and 10.10% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
